Sonic Adventure

Overview

Sonic Adventure is an open world adventure game made by Sonic Team in 1998 for the SEGA Dreamcast. It was released in Japan on December 23, 1998, and once the Dreamcast released in America on September 9, 1999, the game came along with it. It was the first major 3D Sonic game, along with voice acting, a more complex storyline, 4 new characters (2 playable), and a new control scheme.

The new characters introduced in this game were Big the Cat - a lazy cat with his friend, Froggy, that fished all of the time - E-102 Gamma - a robot built by Dr. Eggman that turned on his master - Tikal - an echidna from the Knuckles tribe who protected the Chao - and Chaos - a mutant Chao that absorbed the chaos energy of the emeralds in the temple he lived in.

The game starts with a cutscene of the city, Station Square. People are walking about, cars are driving, everything is normal. However, a sewer drain begins to wobble, and before a moment passes, it blasts off in the air as a gush of water erupts from the drain. More and more water starts to spew out of the sewers, and it floods the city. Then, a fiery water dragon bursts out of the city skyline, roaring in the air. Sonic is seen running through the woods, implied to be confronting the monster.

Game Lore

Sonic's Story

Sonic starts out by watching over the night city. Before long, he notices some police cars speeding towards the city hall. Confused as to what they're up to, he follows them. He walks in on the police officers failing to gun down a water monster, who is idling by the front of the city hall. Assuming that dealing with this creature would be fun, he gives it a couple hits before it melts into a puddle and sinks into a sewer drain. Eggman is watching from above, exclaiming that SOnic knows not what he's dealing with - a water god named Chaos.

The next day, Sonic is napping on one of the pool recliners at the Station Square hotel before he notices his best friend, Tails flying a plane. After a moment, it starts spewing smoke and crashes into the nearby beach. Sonic rushes over to assist Tails, wondering aloud that the fox doesn't usually crash like that. Tails agrees, and pulls out his newest power supply - a Chaos emerald. He had been experimenting with the gem to let it power his plane. Tails then invites Sonic to his shack at the Mystic Ruins to see more of what he was up to, and runs off. Sonic follows by boarding the train to the Mystic Ruins.

Extra Notes

- E102 Gamma was added in because fans were asking for a shooting mode in Sonic games. This similar mechanic would return in Sonic Adventure 2.

- Knuckles' voice in the E3 demo for this game was noticably different than the final since most if not all of his lines were rerecorded for the Dreamcast release. The unfamous "oh no" comes from his first cutscene with the E3 voice acting.

- In addition to Knuckles, most of the playable characters had their ingame voice lines redone for the Dreamcast release (ex: exclaimation when jumping, hitting something, flying). For some reason, the DX version uses the E3 voices instead.

- This is in the final game, but one of the unused songs is a shortened, jingle version of the main theme for Sonic Adventure. In the game, it is under Jingle #5. My theory is that it was originally made for the invincibility theme, but who knows what it might've been actually made for.

- Every Sonic character was redone to look more modern in this game. For example, Sonic's shoes were given grey soles and his eyes were made to be green. Tails gained blue eyes, but Amy was drastically changed into her iconic outfit, hanging down hair, and green eyes.

- A great YouTuber who makes content on this game's unused and hidden secrets is SPEEPShighway. There is so much content for this game that would take me hours and hours to put in here that this person already made videos on. They have stuff ranging from unused animations to region locked DLC. Please check it out if you're interested in this kind of stuff.
